発祥の地 place of origin

(Origin of the former Kanda Fruit and Vegetable Market)

Origin of the former Kanda Fruit and Vegetable Market

This market originated during the Keicho years (1596 to 1615) in the vicinity of present-day Suda-cho, and the area that was called Yatsujigahara at that time.Over the years, it became more and more prominent, and it was one of the three major Edo markets along with Komagome and Senju as the market for Tokugawa Shogunate. For this reason, this market has received a wealth of excellent products not found in other markets. The cargo in the direction of Kazusa Boushu was landed by ship to the riverside of Ryukancho, and the cargo in the direction of Kasai and Sunamura was landed from the current Yanagihara Inari riverbank. According to records at the time, young people in this market were dressed in white costumes and shouted with a dashing voice, while putting a lot of vegetables on a large trolley with a shogunate permit, aiming for a cooking place dedicated to the Tokugawa Shogunate The figure of running was really “dashing”. It was said that the so-called Edokko and the famous Kanda festival, which was called “Edo no Hana” in the cocoon, originated in the Kanda market. This prosperous market was gradually expanded from the Edo period to the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, and the area was expanded to Tacho 2-chome, Tori-Shin-Kokucho, Renjakucho, Saekicho, Kigicho, Sudacho. The number of tsubo was several thousand tsubo. During this period, the Great Kanto Earthquake in September 2012 killed the market, but it was immediately reconstructed and claimed to be the biggest market in Toyo. Unfortunately, this vast large market was not able to enter this place with the change of the times, and moved on December 1, 1939. The long-established market that has continued since the Edo period has also disappeared from this world. The Kanda market has always been nostalgic for us who have lived in this beloved market that has continued before his father and grandfather. It feels like hometown. I want to devote myriad remnants to this monument to remember the old market.
